United to Stop Attacks on Women’s Health in the State Budget

On Tuesday March 1, 2011, Governor Walker introduced his State Budget that threatens women’s health, safety, well-being and economic security in Wisconsin.

This proposal eliminates the state family planning program, which provides critical, life-saving and cost-saving health care like cervical, breast, and prostate cancer screening, well women exams, sexually transmitted infection screening and treatment, and access to contraception for tens of thousands of Wisconsin women and men.

This budget also reduces funding for sexual assault victim services; repeals Wisconsin’s Contraceptive Equity Law, which would allow insurance companies to discriminate against women by denying coverage for prescription birth control even when other prescriptions are covered; and undermines the ability of partners to access preventive health care services together by removing uninsured men off the BadgerCare Family Planning Program.

Governor Walker’s budget proposal also reduces critical health care access. Tens of thousands of uninsured people in Wisconsin will loose their only source for reproductive and basic health care if this budget is passed.

This budget is fiscally irresponsible. Family planning services saved $140 million in 2008. We simply cannot afford to eliminate this funding.
The Coalition to Protect Women's Health in Wisconsin was developed in direct response to the Governor's Budget Proposal and continuous attack on Wisconsin women's health.

The Health Professionals for Reproductive Care (HPRC) group came forth in launching and leading this Coalition, recognizing that health provider voices, as well as patient and other nontraditional voices are a critical advocacy tools to protect access to and quality of comprehensive reproductive health care services and education for their patients and for Wisconsin communities at large.
